Rhinoplasty (Surgery to change shape/size of nose)

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly requested procedure in cosmetic surgery the world over, with recent statistics in New York showing rising trends. The pursuit of the perfect nose has been ongoing for decades or longer with a mention of surgery for broken nose as early as 800 b.c., by Sushruta, an Indian ayurvedic physician.

Standards and definition of beauty has changed over centuries and will vary with ethnicity and global region.  The recent years has seen a lot of focus on Kate Middleton’s nose, with it being described as ‘perfect’. The slightly rounded tip gives fits her face perfectly and gives her a cute look.  A small change in the shape of the nose can transform a person’s looks. Tip-plasty is surgery done to change the shape of the nose tip. It needs good surgical training, technique and experience to be able to create a desired nasal tip shape. It is delicately balanced surgery with little room for error. There are several studies published in cosmetic surgical journals on how to achieve the desired shape of the nose tip.

A person may be unsatisfied with the shape of his/her nose or it may have been damaged in an accident. Some people may have a deviated septum (the cartilage separating the two sides of the nose) and this may lead to breathing problems and may need correction.  All this can be corrected by surgery, so no one needs to suffer a ‘nose’ any more.

Once you have decided to have a rhinoplasty, the next challenge is finding the right surgeon for the job. You should spend some time doing this, as a badly done rhinoplasty is difficult to correct.  The aspects of the surgeon that need consideration are:

  • Qualification and training
  • Years of experience in the field
  • Does he/she keep their knowledge upto date by attending course/conferences?
  • Easy access of clinic
  • Friendly and helpful staff

During the consultation, make sure that you fully understand what the surgeon intends to do, so that your expectations are realistic. Make a list of questions you want to ask.
