Don’t forget your sunscreen!

With summer at its peak, applying sunscreen should be part of your essential skin care routine. Sun can damage your skin in many ways. In short term it can cause tanning and skin burn, pigmentation and dry skin. In the long term it accelerates skin aging, with the appearance of fine line and wrinkles, making the skin look dull.

Sunlight is made up of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA causes the superficial skin burn and the UVB penetrates the skin causing long term damage and aging.

So invest in a high factor SPF (sun protection factor), (between 30 – 50) broad spectrum sunscreen lotion made by a reputable company. SPF more than 50 usually does not add any additional benefit. Follow the instructions, as you may need to apply it several time a day, e.g. after a swim or excessive sweating.

Skin pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a disorder that affects the colour of your skin. It can happen on any part of the body, including the face.

Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin, which is made by special cells in the skin. When these cells get damaged or become unhealthy, it affects the production of melanin. If your body produces too much melanin, it creates dark patches on the skin. Addison’s disease and exposure to the sun are some of the reasons for darker skin. They appear mainly on body parts that are frequently exposed, such as the face, hands and arms.

When the melanin is under produced, it creates lighter patches on your skin. Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin loses its pigment cells (melanocytes) that can cause light skin.

Skin pigmentation can also occur  during pregnancy or during menopause due to hormonal changes.  Having medicines or pills, applying creams and other cosmetics that are not suitable for our skin type can also cause this disorder.

Some treatments and home remedies are possible. Skin lightening cream  work by slowing down melanin production and removing existing melanin from the skin. You can also try a topical treatment that contains Retin-A or alpha-hydroxy acids. Laser treatment or PRP can also be tried.

Wash a potato and cut it into half. Rub the potato onto the affected areas of your face in a circular motion. Repeat this twice daily.  Take a bowl and mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with one tablespoon of turmeric powder. Apply this mixture on the affected areas and leave for 15-20 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water.  Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with two tablespoons of water. Apply this mixture on the patches. Repeat this twice daily. You can squeeze out the red onion juice and apply it to the affected areas of your skin.
